Value in the Vale and the Vale Local Nature Partnership support residents in embracing nature at Crawshay Court
Thanks to funding via the Vale Local Nature Partnership, residents from Crawshay Court, Llantwit Major have received some great new kit to enable them to get more of an insight into their garden and the creatures that visit.
Bird boxes will allow residents to observe the living habits of the birds and for residents not as mobile, binoculars will allow them to still observe from a distance indoors. It is also worth mentioning that encouraging more birds within the gardens will add to the sound of birdsong. This would certainly add to the positive impact around wellbeing for our species of human residents.
The bug hotels will allow residents a closer look into our smaller creatures and remind them of the crucial role they also play in pollinating and supporting a healthy eco system.
The hedgehog house would offer a secure place for these mammals, not only during breeding season, but also during the colder winter hibernation months. Residents already have hedgehogs visiting, so hopefully they will take up residence. Many hedgehog societies/organisations are asking for information around numbers of hedgehogs along with information around their living environment. Allowing hedgehogs the opportunity to use the gardens safely, will give residents the opportunity of gathering data to feed back to relevant societies and organisations
Along with monitoring the birdboxes, a trail cam will also be put in place to allow residents the pleasure of watching and learning more about their garden visitors.
Trail cams are another way to allow residents to explore the world of digital!
Reference books will add value and learning to this process and support with educating residents on lesser known species.
Residents have already shown an interest in these guides and keen to have more.
Finally, we must say a huge thanks to our many volunteers who will support residents in using the equipment and learning more about their garden. We couldn’t do this without you all. We look for- ward to presenting our other sheltered schemes within The Vale with the same equipment and opportunities.
